Tokyo, September 23, 2026 (DAILYNWZ) — Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi won her third gold medal at the Asian Games on Wednesday, setting a new Games record in the women’s 400-meter individual medley and strengthening her growing profile ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The 13-year-old student finished in 4 minutes, 28.56 seconds to break the previous Asian Games record by nearly 4.5 seconds.
Yu had already won gold in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley, setting a new competition record in each event.
She took the lead from the start of the 400-meter medley and quickly turned the race into a solo run to the finish. She finished 3.95 seconds ahead of fellow Chinese swimmer Ke Wenxi, who took silver, while Japan’s Mio Narita won bronze.
Yu’s latest record erased the previous mark set by Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen in 2014.
The three gold medals make Yu one of the standout swimmers at the Tokyo Asian Games, with each of her victories in the three individual events also producing a new Games record.
