CALGARY, October 17, 2026 (DAILYNWZ) — A serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta left people dead and injured and triggered a major fire that was still burning on Saturday evening, Canada’s defence minister said, as military and police authorities launched an investigation.
Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the deaths and injuries but did not disclose how many people had been killed or hurt or what caused the incident at the base in east-central Alberta.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident” at the base, McGuinty told reporters in Ottawa, describing the situation as tragic.
The minister said he could not recall a similar incident in recent memory. The Canadian military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating, he added.
The fire remained active late Saturday, raising concern beyond the military installation. The municipality of Wainwright said on social media that the blaze had crossed the base’s perimeter fence into a nearby district. No evacuation orders had been issued, it said.
The town of Wainwright, with a population of about 6,600, lies just north of the base, which is approximately 210 kilometres (130 miles) east of Edmonton.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government was working closely with Alberta’s provincial government and local authorities. General Jennie Carignan, chief of Canada’s Defence Staff, also said the armed forces were fully engaged with federal, provincial and municipal officials.
“Our priority remains the welfare of our members, their families and their community,” Carignan said in a social media post.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of the country’s busiest military bases. Census data showed that 1,310 military and civilian personnel were stationed there in 2021.
Authorities had not released further details about the cause of the incident, the identities of those affected or the extent of the damage by Saturday evening. The number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the fire remained unclear as the investigation continued.
