BEIJING, November 05, 2026 (DAILYNWZ) — Chinese technology giant Tencent has launched a new artificial intelligence model designed to handle complex tasks while limiting its potential use in cyberattacks and risky biological research, as the company seeks to expand its AI capabilities with a stronger focus on safety.

The new model, called Hy4, was introduced on Wednesday with safeguards intended to reduce the risks associated with advanced AI systems. Tencent said it had trained the model on cybersecurity data focused on defensive applications, including detecting and fixing software vulnerabilities, while excluding material related to offensive cyber operations.

Internal security assessments found no significant concerns about Hy4’s ability to support cyberattacks in the areas tested, the company said. The findings reflect Tencent’s own evaluations and do not establish that the model is free from security risks.

The company also assessed the model’s biological knowledge, finding that it performed strongly in the field but had more limited capabilities in designing open-ended experiments than some of the most advanced AI systems.

These safeguards come as technology companies face growing scrutiny over the potential misuse of increasingly capable AI models, particularly in fields where technical knowledge could be used for harmful purposes.

Hy4 is not limited to cybersecurity and scientific applications. According to Tencent, it can analyze images, interpret complex charts, generate computer code and carry out tasks through software interfaces, giving it a range of uses across professional and technical environments.

The model is already accessible through several of the company’s cloud services and workplace applications. Tencent plans to publish its underlying model weights and technical documentation in the coming days, allowing developers and researchers to examine its architecture and explore further applications.

The launch builds on Tencent’s expanding artificial intelligence portfolio. The company released an early preview of Hy4 in August, with the latest version bringing improvements in financial analysis, scientific research and software development.

Based in Shenzhen, Tencent is best known internationally for WeChat, one of China’s most widely used messaging and digital services platforms. Its latest release reflects the company’s broader push to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI market.

By combining wider technical capabilities with restrictions on sensitive applications, Tencent is seeking to address two challenges facing AI developers: improving model performance while limiting the risks that come with more powerful systems.
