BEIJING, October 06, 2026 (DAILYNWZ) — Huawei Technologies has reached a broad, multi-year patent licensing agreement with Qualcomm covering artificial intelligence, 5G, computing and networking technologies, the Chinese company said Monday.

The deal marks Huawei’s first licensing agreement with Qualcomm to include 5G technology and comes as the Chinese technology giant expands its intellectual-property business amid years of U.S. restrictions on access to advanced chips and critical software.

Under the agreement, Qualcomm will also purchase certain Huawei patents in the United States covering computing, AI and networking, Huawei said in a statement.

Huawei expects the deal to bring the total value of its patent licensing agreements to more than $6.9 billion once completed.

The company said its intellectual-property licensing business has generated positive revenue since 2021, which it attributed to years of substantial investment in research and development.

Huawei has increased its R&D spending in recent years as U.S. trade restrictions imposed since 2019 have constrained its ability to obtain advanced semiconductors and essential software.

The company’s licensing relationship with Qualcomm dates back more than two decades. Huawei made its first licensing payment to the U.S. chipmaker in 2001, while it received its first licensing income from Motorola in 2011.

The Qualcomm agreement follows a separate patent licensing deal with HP Inc., announced by Huawei in August.

The latest agreement adds to Huawei’s efforts to generate revenue from its intellectual-property portfolio as it continues to develop technologies across AI, telecommunications, computing and networking.
